Agricultural insurance: the "Derisking agricultural financing through insurance and digital tools" program enters its operational phase in Kenya
Launched in early September 2026, this three-year program mobilizes expertise in agricultural insurance, climate risk management and finance to strengthen the capacities of sector actors in East and Southern Africa.
Following the announcement of the partnership in Nairobi last May, this program has entered its implementation phase. Led by the Grameen Crédit Agricole Foundation with financial support from the French Development Agency (AFD), it brings together ZEP-RE, a pan-African reinsurance player, and ACRE Africa, specializing in agricultural insurance and risk management solutions.
In a context where climate hazards weaken farmers' yields and incomes and hinder agricultural financing, this cooperation aims to strengthen the availability, effectiveness and use of solutions tailored to the needs of farmers and financial institutions.
Four complementary components
Deployed over three years, this program addresses four priorities:
1/. strengthening digital solutions, risk management data and models;
2/. improve products and services agricultural insurance and financing;
3/. develop skills and institutional capacities;
4/. promote technical popularization, the sharing of experiences and the capitalization of lessons learned.
The objective is to promote sustainable solutions whose achievements can benefit other players in the sector.
Bruno Lepoivre appointed Program Director
To support this deployment, Bruno Lepoivre of Crédit Agricole Assurances, Director of Foresight, Adaptation, and Net Zero, has been appointed Program Director. Based in Nairobi, working closely with the ACRE Africa teams and local stakeholders in the sector, he will coordinate the technical interventions and monitor their implementation.
With over thirty years of experience in the banking and insurance sectors, particularly in agricultural insurance and risk management, he will bring his expertise to the service of skills transfer and the linking of know-how mobilized by the program.
The coming months will be dedicated to structuring the initial technical assistance interventions and preparing their deployment. The Foundation will regularly share the progress and lessons learned from this program, which aims to promote more accessible agricultural insurance and greater resilience of agriculture to climate risks.
