Objective
Yehu Microfinance Services Yehu Ltd, established in 1998 by Choice Humanitarian Kenya, is a microfinance institution that provides loans to groups and individuals, primarily in coastal areas of Kenya. As of September 2025, Yehu had over 44,000 borrowers, including 72 women and 79 rural residents, with a total loan portfolio of €9.2 million.
Yehu's AML/CFT risk profile is relatively well-managed thanks to a simple business model (loans only), relying primarily on electronic transactions and face-to-face interactions. However, due to ongoing uncertainties surrounding microfinance regulation in Kenya and the limited integration of AML/CFT provisions within this regulation, the institution could benefit from tailored technical assistance. This would enable it to better understand AML/CFT best practices, particularly regarding the implementation of appropriate compliance controls and staff training, as well as raising awareness of these issues among its teams and governance. This technical assistance could also suggest improvements to align Yehu's compliance framework with international best practices, which are increasingly becoming a prerequisite for international lenders.
