Context :
In Indonesia, traditional financial inclusion is still needed, especially outside of Java. The country continues to face significant social challenges (Indonesia ranks 112th out of 193 in the Human Development Index). Despite improvements over the years, Indonesia exhibits disparities in education, health, and regional development. Gender equality also has room for improvement. Indonesia is vulnerable to the effects of climate change and natural disasters (frequent earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, floods, and even droughts).
THE INSTITUTION:
Bina Artha has been a major player in the Indonesian microfinance market since its inception in 2011. It suffered a significant decline in the quality of its portfolio during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, initially because strict anti-COVID measures eroded client discipline, and subsequently because the "return to normal" strategy backfired. Since mid-2023, Bina Artha has implemented measures to restore a healthy portfolio, particularly following the appointment of a new CEO in October of that year.
Impact :
It has a presence in Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi through a network of 466 branches and 3.9k employees. Its mission is to provide working capital loans (through regulations), primarily to women (97,130).
