Context :
Despite recent economic stabilization, Pakistan still suffers from a structural current account deficit and a budget deficit (due to costly energy imports, poor national infrastructure, uncompetitive exports, and low tax collection). Pakistan is affected by internal and geopolitical conflicts (most recently, a brief armed conflict with India in May 2025), political instability, and continues to face enormous development challenges (high poverty, low spending on health and education, inadequate infrastructure, etc.), as well as significant climate risk.
THE INSTITUTION:
Kashf is a Tier 2 microfinance institution established in 1996 by Roshaneh Zafar, the current Managing Director. It is registered as a non-bank microfinance company and supervised by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan. Kashf offers individual loans, manages a gross loan portfolio of €112 million, and has 926,000 active clients. It operates in Punjab, Sindh, Pakistan, and Balochistan (covering 42,000 parts of the country) through a network of 422 branches and 4,700 employees.
Impact :
Kashf is dedicated to the economic empowerment of low-income women, offering tailored financial products and services (approximately 100,000 clients). Its comprehensive approach encompasses economic empowerment, capacity building, and advocacy that challenge systemic inequalities.
