Context:
In 2023, Benin is experiencing positive economic momentum driven by structural reforms and increasing investments in infrastructure. Agriculture remains a key pillar of Benin’s economy, accounting for approximately 25% of GDP and employing more than 60% of the active population. With its maritime access to the Gulf of Guinea and the modernization of the Port of Cotonou, Benin is strengthening its strategic role as a logistics and trade hub in West Africa.
Institution:
UNACREP is a tier-2 microfinance institution established in 1992 at the initiative of the NGO Sasakawa / Global 2000. Its mission is to enhance food security in Sub-Saharan Africa by providing financial and technical support to smallholder farmers. It operates as a cooperative owned by over 159,000 members (as of September 2023).
Impact:
UNACREP actively contributes to improving the living conditions of smallholder farmers and rural micro-entrepreneurs in Benin. Through its accessible and tailored financial services, it supports food security and local economic development.
